Disney's new CEO Josh D'Amaro has taken over from Bob Iger, who is stepping down today (18 March) after nearly 20 years in the role.

D'Amaro, a 28-year Disney veteran and the former Disney Experiences chairman, was announced as the Walt Disney Company's new CEO in February.

"There is no limit to what Disney can achieve, and I am excited to work with our teams across the company and brilliant creative partners to honor Disney’s remarkable legacy while continuing to innovate, grow, and deliver exceptional value for our consumers and shareholders," D'Amaro said at the time.

Iger said D'Amaro is "an exceptional leader and the right person to become our next CEO".

"His ability to combine creativity with operational excellence is exemplary and I am thrilled for Josh and the company," he added.

First appointed as Disney's CEO in October 2005, Iger will continue to serve as senior advisor and a member of the Disney board until his retirement on 31 December.

He served as CEO of Disney from 2005 to 2020, before returning to lead the company in November 2022 following the departure of Bob Chapek.

Under Iger's leadership, the Disney portfolio has expanded through the major acquisitions of brands including Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm.

During his tenure, he has also grown the company's theme parks segment and launched the Disney+ streaming service.

However, in a recent email to members of Disney's official fan club D23, Iger wrote: "None of this happened because of any one person.

"It is the result of talented teams, bold creativity, and a shared belief in what Disney can be at its best."

James Gorman, Disney's board chairman, said last month: "After nearly two decades leading Disney, the Iger era has been defined by enormous growth, an unyielding commitment to excellence in creativity and innovation, and exemplary stewardship of this iconic institution."

Succeeding D'Amaro as Disney Experiences' new chairman is Thomas Mazloum.
