PGAV, a global leader in the planning and design of unique destinations, has been engaged by the Air Zoo Aerospace and Science Center, an internationally acclaimed Smithsonian-affiliated aerospace and science centre in Kalamazoo, Michigan, US, to develop a strategic vision and master plan.
This plan leverages the Air Zoo’s current momentum to establish a strong foundation for significant improvement projects to enhance the visitor experience and promote sustainable growth. By adopting a dynamic and collaborative strategy, the initiative seeks to create new business opportunities while solidifying the Air Zoo’s community presence for the foreseeable future.
The comprehensive and inclusive planning strategy encompasses community involvement, market research, interpretive design, business strategy, and the strategic development of new experiences in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. This plan will direct the Air Zoo in fulfilling its mission to create positive impacts at local, regional, and national levels while fostering connections that enhance financial sustainability.
Redefining the museum experience
“We are thrilled to embark on this journey with PGAV to shape the future of the Air Zoo,” says Troy Thrash, Air Zoo CEO. “This collaboration will help us build on our mission and community impact. We will ignite curiosity and inspire our visitors with experiences that leave a lasting impression.”
Over its 45-year history, the Air Zoo has expanded from a display of nine planes in a hangar to a remarkable, world-class aerospace and science centre featuring over 100 rare aircraft and spacecraft, interactive exhibits, and innovative educational programmes for individuals of all ages. Its restoration efforts on historic aircraft have received international acclaim.
“Innovation is in the Air Zoo DNA,” says Tom Owen, PGAV vice president. “Working with the Air Zoo team allows our team to push the boundaries and redefine what a museum and science experience can be.”
The finalised plan will outline a roadmap for a phased rollout of various expansion and enhancement projects across the 50-acre campus adjacent to Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport. Scheduled for completion in 2025, the master plan will subsequently direct a strategic, multi-year implementation process.
Last year, PGAV partnered with the Gospel Music Hall of Fame to begin an extensive master planning project. The master plan will outline an approach for the Gospel Music Hall of Fame to transform the former Second Baptist Church in St. Louis, Missouri, into a centre for education, culture, and performing arts, with an exhibition hall and cutting-edge recording studio.
