Folklore-inspired troll sculptures to go on view at Filoli

Filoli Historic House and Garden in Woodside, California is introducing six gigantic trolls with an environmental message for a new outdoor exhibition.

Opening on 7 June, Trolls: Save the Humans showcases six of Danish artist Thomas Dambo‘s folklore-inspired troll sculptures.

The travelling exhibition explores the intersection of folklore, poetry, sustainability, and the human relationship to the natural environment.

“I’m so happy my trolls get to spend some time amongst the giant redwoods at Filoli,” said Dambo. “I spent a day hiking in the forest, and it is a magical place where I know my trolls will feel at home.”

Like many of Dambo’s sculptures, each troll has been created from reclaimed wood. They can be found on a mile-long trail at Filoli from 7 June through 10 November.

Guests will see them planting a garden at the trailhead, resting among the redwoods, and hanging birdhouses in the oak woodlands.

“At Filoli, our focus is to connect people to the magic of nature,” said Kara Newport, president and CEO of Filoli.

Nature-based experience at Filoli

“These gentle giants invite everyone to explore and interact with nature.

“Thomas Dambo’s trolls remind us that creativity and sustainability go hand in hand. It is a new opportunity for visitors, especially families, to find new adventures at Filoli.”

In addition to the troll sculptures, Filoli will offer additional programming focusing on nature play, wellness and performing arts.

Also, a nature play area for children will be installed with willow huts, an oak tree tumble, musical play elements, and a children’s theatre.
