International Zoo Educators (IZE), a network that supports educators with training, resources, and a global community, has announced that the 27th biennial IZE Conference will be hosted by the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town, South Africa.

The internationally renowned conference will take place from 12 to 16 October 2026.

It will provide educators, communicators, and changemakers working in the zoological, aquarium, environmental, and conservation sectors with an opportunity to share ideas, inspire innovation, and explore effective ways to advance conservation education.

Helen Lockhart, conservation and sustainability manager at the Two Oceans Aquarium, says: "It is an honour to have been chosen to host the 2026 IZE Conference at the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town. In 52 years, this is only the second time the IZE Conference has been held in Africa (the first time being in 2006).

"Bringing the world’s zoo and aquarium educators to Africa will broaden their perspectives, enable them to experience diversity in culture and indigenous knowledge, and learn about some of the conservation and education challenges which their African colleagues experience.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for staff at African zoos, aquariums, and other environmental and conservation organisations to share their expertise and knowledge with their peers from other facilities around the world."

This gathering of the IZE community at the southern tip of Africa will provide a memorable exchange of knowledge, culture, and partnership in one of the world’s most biodiverse regions.

Inspiring impactful change

The 2026 IZE Conference will explore the theme One Planet, Many Voices: Educating for Biodiversity and Connection.

Ecosystems flourish when many species coexist and support one another. Similarly, the international zoo and aquarium community thrives when diverse voices unite around a common goal of fostering empathy, encouraging responsible actions, and building resilient futures for both people and the planet.

The Two Oceans Aquarium is excited to welcome and host this year's IZE Conference. For three decades, it has been a leader in curriculum-based environmental education, expanding access to marine education and contributing to ocean conservation through the work of the non-profit Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation.

The Foundation's early childhood development and school programmes presently reach over 100,000 learners each year. Furthermore, it provides a wide variety of enrichment courses for children and adults, job shadowing and internship opportunities, as well as outreach through mobile vans and puppet shows.

Bianca Engel, deputy head of ocean campus, says: "Over the years, many young people who have come through the Foundation’s educational programmes have gone on to become scientists, environmental educators, conservationists, and activists.

"Now, more than ever, we need conservation champions to drive impactful change for the future."

Additionally, the Conference call for abstracts is now open. Submissions can be made until 17h00 GMT on 28 February 2026. Visit the event website for more information.

Last year, IZE and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) published Leading Social Change for Biodiversity Conservation.

This special edition showcases practical, real-world case studies from zoos and aquariums across the world, illustrating how this community is driving meaningful social and behavioural change that benefits people, wildlife, and the natural environment.
