Merlin uses holographic-style projection tech ahead of Galacticoaster opening

Synced Hologauze projections on the London Eye and the Orlando Eye signalled the start of a ten-day countdown

Merlin Entertainments has connected two landmarks, the London Eye and the Orlando Eye, with holographic-style projections.

Galacticoaster is a new ride set to open at Legoland Florida Resort and Legoland California Resort, and the display aimed to build excitement for the attraction, which invites visitors to build a Lego spacecraft, venture into space, and protect the Lego Galaxy.

Merlin utilised Hologauze, a patented projection material by Holotronica, to create the cinematic moment.

The technology enables projected imagery to appear vividly on camera while remaining almost transparent to the naked eye, producing a “holographic” effect without blocking the structure behind it.

Pixel Artworks, a London-based immersive experience studio recognised worldwide for advancing projection mapping, animation, and live-event visuals, created the creative execution. The firm recently partnered with Merlin to animate London's acclaimed New Year's Eve fireworks, using Hologauze in a pioneering live broadcast that reached millions.

“By bringing this technology to the U.S., we’re exploring new ways to tell bigger, bolder stories across Merlin’s attractions, while building excitement for major moments like the launch of Galacticoaster at LEGOLAND Florida," says Daniel Norgrove, director of marketing for Merlin Entertainments.

Galacticoaster is an innovative indoor, space-themed family roller coaster set to debut at Legoland Florida Resort on 27 February and at Legoland California Resort on 6 March.

It is the first indoor coaster constructed inside Legoland Florida since the park opened in 2011, and the first new coaster at Legoland California in over 20 years.

Representing Merlin Entertainments’ largest-ever single in-park investment across these two destinations, the over $90 million commitment highlights the company’s ongoing dedication to innovation and immersive, technology-centric experiences.

In Lego Galaxy, Legoland Florida’s newest and most high-tech area, guests can use interactive touchscreens and RFID technology to design their own custom spacecraft before entering.

Lego Galaxy features over 625 ride combinations, immersive effects, and appearances by classic Lego Space characters, making 2026 a significant milestone for Legoland Resorts.

Last summer, Merlin celebrated the opening of Legoland Shanghai Resort, the latest addition to its global portfolio of Lego-themed experiences. Located in the Jinshan District, the resort blends immersive storytelling, interactive rides, and hands-on play.
