DesignPM (DPM), the museum and arts project management specialist, recently worked on the design and build fit-out of the prestigious Swaine London flagship store on New Bond Street.

As the D&B contractor, the firm was responsible for engaging two design teams, Malherbe Paris for the conceptual phase and Atelier Architecture and Design as the executive architect. Furthermore, the company’s engagement went beyond contracting to include thorough project, cost, and design management, allowing Swaine’s vision to become a reality.

Swaine London

Swaine, the world’s oldest luxury brand, has served royalty and nobility for more than 270 years. Swaine has relaunched its brand discreetly, away from the aggressive marketing techniques used by other firms. Deeply ingrained in British society, the brand’s name has become linked with military leaders, James Bond, and other iconic figures.

Swaine’s influence also extends beyond the United Kingdom, transforming regular characters into fashion icons – for example, it created Indiana Jones’ famed ‘Raiders Poet’ hat and other classic styles.

High-end finishes

Today, the flagship London store features a captivating retail space spanning two levels. Plus, a fully equipped leather-working studio in the basement employs expert craftspeople who use the finest materials to manufacture the goods displayed and sold above.

DPM coordinated and handled all subcontracts and materials brokerage for the whole fit-out of the ground floor, basement and mezzanine, from strip-out and enabling works through commissioning and handover. Inside the store, high-end finishes have been produced to match Swaine’s brand prestige. DPM also just finished the D&B fit-out of Swaine’s store in London’s Burlington Arcade.

DPM’s knowledge and experience were invaluable in negotiating multiple hurdles and constraints while adhering to stringent construction codes. The firm also helped the client with lease negotiations and intricate interfaces with the Landlord’s site-wide upgrade operations.

It orchestrated and supervised subcontractors and material procurement from the building’s initial shell and core, overseeing everything from fire strategy design, planning and building control consents, excavating the pavement on New Bond Street to install smoke vents, to complex mechanical and electrical installations, including roof plant.

Making the client’s vision a reality

DPM managed design revisions expertly throughout the project, reconciling the client’s vision with practical constraints. Aligning the brief with the realities of the building was a complex undertaking, but DPM remained steadfast in its commitment to delivering a solution that satisfied the client’s high expectations.

From handmade carpets and one-of-a-kind solid wood flooring patterns to the immersive installation in the Swaine “Rain Room,” DPM was proud to help Swaine’s vision for the flagship shop come to fruition. Swaine and DPM’s partnership resulted in a successful relaunch of the brand, infusing fresh life into its legacy of luxury.

Reflecting on the project, DPM says:

“At the heart of experiential retail lies the art of captivating consumers as active participants in brand narratives. Drawing upon our vast experience in managing museum projects, DPM recognizes the parallels between these sectors.

“Leveraging this insight, we present a fresh and innovative approach to retail and hospitality design and fit-out. By seamlessly integrating brand messaging into immersive experiences, our services empower clients to truly engage their audience and craft unforgettable stories through their spaces.

“With DPM’s guidance, businesses can unlock the full potential of their brands, creating lasting connections that leave a lasting impression.”

The company works closely with clients to turn their concepts into practical realities, making a lasting impression on their audiences.

DPM has worked on high-end retail rehabilitation projects in the challenging constraints of central London’s prime lifestyle attractions.
