Star Wars droid fans will find dozens of astromechs in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge designed to serve as mechanics and engineers, scouts and pilots, soldiers and assassins and even cooks and disc jockeys.
The Galaxy’s Edge droids can be found in virtually every corner of the Black Spire Outpost on the Star Wars planet of Batuu. The remote outer rim village serves as the setting for the new 14-acre themed lands now open at Disneyland in California and coming soon to Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida.
Let’s take a closer look at all the Galaxy’s Edge droids and where to find them in the new Star Wars themed land.
Design your own iconic Galaxy’s Edge droids – R2-D2
Smart and spunky R2-D2 interacts with visitors and poses for photos as the astromech rolls around Droid Depot. Artoo has taken part in countless missions and battles across the Star Wars galaxy.
Fans can design and build their own 3-and-half-foot-tall R-unit droid for $25,000 in the Galaxy’s Edge shop.
BB-8
An audio-animatronic BB-8 will greet riders in the queue of the Rise of the Resistance when the attraction opens later this year. The orange and white ball droid rolls into the Ready Room of the Resistance base camp as riders prepare to take part in a dangerous off-planet mission against the First Order.
R-3X
DJ R-3X, also known as Rex, spins an alien soundtrack in Oga’s Cantina. The former Star Tours pilot was reprogrammed by Droid Depot shopkeeper Mubo and given to cantina proprietor Oga Garra to pay off a debt. The quirky and talkative disc jockey plays a 3-hour set of cantina music described as Jawa meets new age meets 1980s pop.
8D-J8
Former smelter droid 8D-J8 works at the Ronto Roasters restaurant. It cooks barbecue meats over a grill, fired by a repurposed podracer engine. The audio-animatronic droid constantly complains about his thankless job while endlessly turning a spit of meat.
Smelter droids, which show up in “The Return of the Jedi” and “The Phantom Menace,” typically work in the harsh environments of ore-extraction facilities.
R5-P8
Sassy R5-P8 is the trusty droid of space pirate Hondo Ohnaka. The automated repair mechanic can be found in the queue of the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run attraction. The white and red R5-unit keeps his boss on schedule and also fixes failing equipment in the Command Center of Ohnaka Transport Solutions.
IG-88
The chrome IG-88 assassin droid sits on the second-story balcony in Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities. The battered war droid turned bounty hunter answered Darth Vader’s call to capture Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon in “The Empire Strikes Back.”
MSE-6
A small and boxy wheeled MSE-6 series repair droid can be spotted on the upper shelf of the First Order Cargo shop. Mouse droids perform small repairs and guide visitors, as well as delivering messages aboard Death Stars and Star Destroyers in “Star Wars” films
GNK
GNK power droids commonly serve as generators for mobile military operations. A pair of gonk droids can be found hooked together in the hidden Resistance camp. This is just outside of Black Spire Outpost. GNK droids will also power the lights in the Rise of the Resistance attraction queue.
WED Treadwell
A WED Treadwell droid can be found in the maintenance bay of Ohnaka Transport Solutions. The shady intergalactic shipping company serves as the queue for the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run attraction.
The multi-armed repair droid has a telescopic visual sensor surrounded by articulated arms with tooltips. The Treadwells repair starships, droids and machinery in the Star Wars universe.
Textile Droid
In Black Spire Outfitters, a broken-down textile droid is equipped with dozens of thread spools. It once served as an automated sewing machine. The apparel shop in the outdoor marketplace sells robes, tunics, hooded scarves and belts. These are based on wardrobe pieces from “Star Wars” films.
Outside Droid Depot
The audio-animatronic droids in front of the Droid Depot interact with visitors. They do this through the Galaxy’s Edge Data Pad mobile phone app.
The broad-shouldered gold and red B-U4D maintenance droid nicknamed Buford makes an appearance in “The Force Awakens”. Also, nearby is an older model black and gold R1 droid. This stands at more than 6 feet tall.
The other Galaxy’s Edge droids in front of the shop include:
- Orange and white R5 unit with cone-shaped dome
- Blue and white R4 unit with a conical dome
- GNK power generator
Behind Droid Depot
Behind the droid-building shop, R2 and R5 units get an oil bath amid stacks of droid pieces and parts. An upside down GNK droid powers the operation.
An Imperial viper droid with five manipulator arms hangs in a net on the wall of the courtyard. A similar probe droid was destroyed on the Star Wars planet of Hoth in “The Empire Strikes Back.”
Trade Federation B1 battle droids can also be seen in a cage behind the oil bath.
Build your own Galaxy’s Edge Droids – Inside Droid Depot
Finally, the build-your-own Galaxy’s Edge droids shop is filled with full-sized R2, R4, R5 and BB units. Droid parts are stacked throughout the store. Pieces of protocol droids also travel along an overhead dry cleaner-like conveyor system.
A locked cage in the shop holds DUM-series droids designed for maintaining podracers. The collapsible pit droids seen in “The Phantom Menace” fold into a compact form when tapped on the nose.
Nearby, a 2-1B droid can also be spotted in the cage. A similar surgical droid operated on Luke Skywalker after a Wampa attack in “The Empire Strikes Back.”
