The Motown Museum has released an architectural flyover animation showcasing the finished $50 million expansion. The bird’s-eye view video offers a look at the entertainment complex in Detroit.
The attraction previously released renderings, but the video gives the first full view of the Motown Museum, which was first announced in 2016.
The Motown Museum wrote on Twitter: “We’re reaching higher ground! While work on our $50 million expansion is just beginning, this conceptual birdseye view brings the highly anticipated transformation of #MotownMuseum to life.”
The animation unveils the scale of the project, including the Hitsville USA house that was home to Motown’s first HQ, the glass atrium and courtyard, and the colourful main building.

The video, which you can check out above, was created by architecture firm Hamilton Anderson Associates.
In September 2019, the Motown Museum broke ground on the first phase of its $50m expansion, with the occasion marked by Motown founder Berry Gordy.
Gordy previously announced plans to donate $4 million towards the project. He said: “I’m excited about the future of Motown Museum and happy to support it.
“Not only will the expanded museum entertain and tell the stories of talented and creative people who succeeded against all odds, but it will also inspire and create opportunity for people to explore their dreams the way I did mine.”
Interactive exhibits, recording studios, and theatre
The Motown Museum will become a destination with interactive exhibits, a state-of-the-art performance theatre, and recording studios.
It will also get an expanded shopping experience as well as meeting spaces, and is designed and built around the current space and Hitsville USA.
The first phase of construction is scheduled to complete in summer 2020. The fundraising campaign has now crossed the $25 million threshold.
Meanwhile, the Universal Hip Hop Museum is opening in the Bronx in 2023. It will boast virtual and augmented reality technologies for an immersive experience.
