From time travel to motorcycles, award winning design and audio visual studio Sarner has been busy with a number of interesting new projects lately. Here’s a quick round-up.
Madame Tussauds Blackpool’s new Doctor Who exhibit
As British TV viewers become acquainted with the 13th Doctor Who, played by Jodie Whittaker, visitors to Madame Tussauds Blackpool can meet a wax replica of the character – as pictured above. The long-running Sci-fi series began on the BBC in 1963 but was revived in 2005. It returned for a new series on October 7, with Whittaker replacing Peter Capaldi in the lead role. Many more Doctor Who fans around the world are expected to see the show over the coming months.
Whittaker’s representation of the Doctor appears at Madame Tussauds Blackpool together with the Tardis, a vintage phone box that is the character’s time machine. Sarner designed and built the set in collaboration with BBC Studios and operator Merlin Entertainments. Merlin Studios created the waxwork itself, as it does for all Tussauds outlets. Visitors journey through four themed zones as they interact with a variety of aspects from the famous TV show.
Sarner previously worked with BBC Worldwide on a larger Doctor Who Experience, which debuted at London’s Olympia in 2011. A year later it moved to Cardiff, where the show is filmed, and operated for a further five years.
The ‘new’ Fram Museum
Over in Oslo, the award-winning Fram Museum re-opened its doors in May after an upgrade by Sarner. The institution, which tells the story of Norwegian polar exploration, now features many ‘cool’ new attractions. Among them are a 270-degree film that surrounds the ship from which the museum takes its name.
Another highlight, as pictured here, is an igloo inspired by Roald Amundsen’s journey through the North West Passage. After a busy summer, the Fram retained its “Norway’s best museum” status on TripAdvisor.
WWII motorcycles exhibition
Sarner has been appointed to create a major new touring exhibition based on a ‘world-class’ private collection of rare World War II vintage motorcycles.
Visitors will be able to experience first-hand the machines and stories of the military men and women that rode them. A total of 28 superbly restored motorcycles will be displayed in realistic dioramas with atmospheric lighting and sound. The 7,000 sq m exhibition will also feature audio-visual presentations, large-format interpretative graphics and hands-on interactive activities and simulators.
It is scheduled to open at its first location in June 2019 to coincide with the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day landings. Unfortunately we can’t tell you where right now.
