Get ready for IAAPA Expo 2022

The leisure industry’s premier event returns to Orlando with new innovations and trendsetting products

IAAPA Expo 2022 will see operators and suppliers from across the attractions industry, including amusement and theme parks, water parks, FECs, museums and historic sites, science centres, zoos, aquariums, resorts and cruise lines, come together in Florida from 14 – 18 November 2022.

The association is expecting this year’s event to be even more popular than before. 25,000 attendees are preparing to head to Orlando, a figure 45% higher than that of last year. 

As the largest sector event, 1,000 exhibiting companies will join 300 thought leaders and speakers from around the world. One hundred countries will be represented at this year’s international event. It is expected to be covered by over 175 media outlets including blooloop, the industry’s most-read news source for professionals. Further coverage will feature on the official IAAPA Connect+ app and #IAAPAExpos on social media.

IAAPA Expo 2022 Event Details

“When play is your passion, fun happens,” says an IAAPA representative. “Join industry leaders, decision-makers, and visionaries at IAAPA Expo for a concentrated blast of innovation, and excitement that will inspire and advance your business.”

IAAPA Expo will mark Hal McEvoy‘s last appearance as president and CEO at the Orlando event. The association recently confirmed that Jakob Wahl will step into the role in January next year. McEvoy will provide support until his retirement in April 2023.

Educational sessions at IAAPA Expo 2022

As usual, the IAAPA Expo agenda is full of insightful educational sessions, presented by industry leaders. These are designed to help attendees grow their businesses, gain inspiration and advance their careers. 

Topics include entertainment, facility operations, games and merchandise, food and beverage, financial management and information technology. Sessions will also cover human resources, marketing, safety, security and much more.

Education sessions at IAAPA Expo include EDUSessions, EDUTalks and EDUTours. There are also learning lunches and multi-day institutes and symposiums.

Monday 14 November

Highlights include a session entitled Immersive Theater in Location-Based Entertainment: The Creative Whys and the Operational Hows.

The moderator is Lacy Campbell, creative director at The Bezark Company. She will join panellists Adam Bezark, chief creative officer of The Bezark Company; Elysia Segal, producer of public programmes at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York; Eric Hoff, senior creative director at Thinkwell Group; and Ameenah Kaplan, immersive experience director for Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser at the Walt Disney Company. It takes place on Monday 14 November from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.

Also on Monday, Moment Factory’s David Conway will join a panel discussion called Thinking Differently About Digital Experiences in Museums. This will be from 10 – 11.30. It will include insights from Matt Solari of BRC Imagination Arts, Bobbie Oakley from the Museum of Science Boston and Robert Mintz of the Asian Art Museum.

In the same timeslot, RocketRez’s CEO, John Pendergrast, will lead The Incredible Customer Journey – Following the Data Through Every Digital Touchpoint.

Later, at 2.30, Joshua Liebman of ROLLER will speak on How Your Digital Experience Impacts Your Onsite Experience. Also at 2.30, Philip Wilson, executive VP of Extreme Engineering, will join Denos Vourderis of Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park; Genevieve Norris-Brown from Seabreeze Park; Brian Knoebel of Knoebels Amusement Resort and Lauren Crosby from Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari. At 4 pm on Monday, Taylor Jeffs, chief creative officer at Legacy Entertainment, will join Jeff Whiting of Whiting’s Foods at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and Bernard Campbell of Whirley Drinkworks for a discussion on the latest food and beverage trends.

Tuesday 15 November

Tuesday kicks off with an early educational session entitled New Approaches to Designing an Indoor Water Paradise. Scheduled for 8.45 am, this features insights from Emily Colombo, WhiteWater’s VP of strategic sales partnerships; Chris Grap of Mall of America, Alexei Chachkov, park designer at WhiteWater; Josh Martin, president of Martin Aquatic and Richard Coleman, CEO of American Resort Management.

At 2.30, Solving Problems as a Young Executive will be led by Mark Stepanian, president of CAVU Designwerks. He is joined by Jessi O’Daniel, general manager of Typhoon Texas Waterpark in Austin.

Also on Tuesday, the Global Sustainability Summit takes place from 2.30 to 5.15 pm. Taking part will be Iliana Rodriguez of Grupo Xcaret; Eric O’Rourke of FORREC; Mark Penning of Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products and Joshua Seymour and Neva Heaston from Royal Caribbean. They will also be joined by David Rosenberg from Monterey Bay Aquarium, IAAPA’s Jakob Wahl and Andy Fastman of Cuningham.

Retrospective: The Past, Present, and Future World of Virtual Reality takes place at 4 pm on Tuesday. Speakers include Nick Dimatteo of F9D; Hologate’s Gregg Katano; Todd Maunsell of Cinergy Entertainment and Bob Cooney.

On Wednesday at 10 am, Jeffrey Havlik, VP of PGAV Destinations will join Lloyd Notley, CMO of Escapology to discuss Ride Design for the Non-Rider: How to Engage Every Guest. Also at 10 am, Mel McGowan of Storyland Studios; RJ Temple of Walt Disney Imagineering; Arielle Rassel from Scenario and Logan Zawacki of Sally Dark Rides will speak during a session called When Did You Know it was Time to Go?

At 12 pm, a panel will explore the metaverse in-depth during a learning lunch: To the Metaverse and Beyond – Creating Innovative & Cross-reality Attractions. SPREE Interactive’s Jonathan Nowak Delgado and Louis Alfieri of Raven Sun Creative will join Louise Murray of Triptyq Capital, Brandon Willey from Hownd and Theron Skees of The Designer’s Creative Studio.

In the afternoon, Roman Hauer of Mack Rides will speak at Safety in Attractions: Risk Assessment Best Practices at 2.30. Meanwhile, Michael Collins, senior partner at Leisure Development Partners and Extreme Engineering’s Phil Wilson will join Suphi Aydiner of Outdoor Factory, Liseberg’s Andreas Andersen and Nick Neuman of Water Technology Inc. to discuss The Trickle Down Rut: How Investor Behavior has Impacted Attractions.

Wednesday afternoon’s highlight is the annual Legends panel, at 4 pm. This year’s session is called Legends 2022: Epcot, 40 Years in a State of Becoming. The speakers are Bob Rogers of BRC Imagination Arts, Disney’s Jodi McLaughlin, Kartika Rodriguez and Bob Weis, and Rick Rothschild of FAR Out! Creative Direction. At the same time, the IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equality, and Accessibility) Roundtable features Pamela Landwirth of Give Kids the World, Clara Rice of RWS Entertainment Group, Adrea Gibbs of Meow Wolf, Steve Bell of Gateway Ticketing Systems and more.

Ahead of IAAPA Expo, the organisation has announced the recipients of its IAAPA Service Awards. Franceen Gonzales will receive the Lifetime Service Award and Phil Wilson is the winner of the Meritorious Service Award. Ryan Stana is the winner of the Outstanding Service Award, and Young Professional of the Year is Josh Liebman.

The IAAPA Hall of Fame honours extraordinary pioneers who have assisted “the growth and betterment of the entire industry.” This year’s honorees, Xavier Lopez Ancona, Joan Ganz Cooney, Darrell Metzger and Dennis Speigel, will also be celebrated.

Charity events taking place during IAAPA Expo 2022 include the 19th Annual IAAPA International Charity Golf Tournament, the 12th Annual IAAPA Charity Motorcycle Run benefitting Give Kids The World and the 16th Annual IAAPA Footprints From the Heart 5K Run/1-Mile Walk benefitting Give Kids The World Village.

Throughout the week, there are also special receptions, guided tours of the show floor, and visits to various local attractions. Plus there is an extra special IAAPA Celebrates party on Thursday evening at Universal’s Islands of Adventure.

CAVU Designwerks

CAVU Designwerks, the media-based attractions specialist, will demo its new self-driving vehicle at IAAPA Expo 2022. This has been created in partnership with KUKA Robotics.

The Self Driving Vehicle (SDV) takes KUKA’s industrial platform at its base and transforms it into a safe visitor attraction. It can also interact with other cutting-edge tech such as AI, real-time gaming engines and projection mapping. By using a vehicle that has proven itself in the industrial marketplace, the two companies have created an attraction that costs a fraction of most existing autonomous vehicles.

The SDV can be themed and tailored for different audiences, from families to thrill seekers, and is ideal for immersive storytelling.

Earlier this year, CAVU also launched its internship programme with its first cohort of young professionals. Further groups are set to begin in January and May 2023.

Cloward H20 – booth #2247

Cloward H2O, an expert in aquatic design, will return to IAAPA Expo following the completion of large-scale projects around the globe.

Notable projects include the recently finished Boca Raton in Florida, a beautiful resort property renovation. The project features three large pools, two spas, a splash pad, a FlowRider, waterslides, and a lazy river. Cloward H2O provided full aquatic engineering services designing and detailing the water-containing structures, pipe networks, water treatment and feature mechanical systems, and electrical and controls.

DOF Robotics – boothes #2286 & #2686

DOF Robotics, a producer of dynamic simulation platforms, has recently installed its first Digital Park: Mission Space in Europe. The firm, until recently known as DOF Robotics, will be sharing details of the project at IAAPA Expo.

Delivered within an immersive 30-40 mins space experience, the eight sections of Mission Space deliver a story where visitors become astronauts and complete their debut space mission. Combining entertainment and education, the first Mission Space experience is now open to guests at Camlica Tower in Istanbul, Turkey.

Dronisos – booth #751

Dronisos, a leading drone light show specialist, will be at IAAPA Expo to identify potential partners and collaboration opportunities in the US.

Headquartered in Bordeaux, France, Dronisos’ North American office is located in Orlando where IAAPA Expo returns this year. Since its inception over five years ago, Dronisos has performed more than 50,000 drone flights in over 25 countries globally. Extreme Engineering – booth #2600

Extreme Engineering is a leading adventure attractions company. It will present new suspended coaster projects, its all-new Flex-Shade system, and new tooling for its fabrication services. The manufacturer is now also taking preorders for its all-new Parkour Around system.

This summer, Extreme Engineering announced the next location for its award-winning Cloud Coaster product, in Tennessee, US. The firm’s signature suspended coaster product will open at Wilderness at the Smokies next year.

This takes place on Thursday 17 November at 10 am. Gateway Ticketing Systems – booth #4847

Gateway Ticketing Systems, a leading provider of admission control systems, will return to the amusement industry’s leading tradeshow for the twenty-ninth time.

At the presentation, 10 Successful Factors in Choosing the Right Ticketing System for Your Attraction, business solutions architect Chad Wallace will offer priceless advice that will speed up and improve the evaluation process.

Greenspan Projects Ltd – booth #1057

Greenspan Projects Ltd. is a creative design and build specialist for the visitor attraction industry. At IAAPA Expo 2022, it will be showcasing its latest bespoke-built tech-infused gamified golf solution as it expands further into the competitive socialising market. This will provide a truly immersive experience as guests can encounter the game-changing technology that will take the social entertainment aspect of golf to the next level.

Recently, the company completed a project for Zip World resulting in the world’s first-ever adventure golf in a cave. It has also worked on multiple Boom Battle Bar venues across the UK. Inowize is a creative company delivering interactive experiences. It manufactures attractions, games, and experiences designed to lift guests’ spirits, get pulses racing and make customers smile.

The tech leisure firm will be demonstrating two unique attractions. These are QBIX, its unattended ‘Portal of Fun’, and the Arkadia 6 Player VR Arena.

Making its official debut at the event, multiplayer attraction QBIX offers guests a completely interactive experience through engaging gameplay. This all happens in the space of a 13 x 13-foot cube. Attendant-free, QBIX lets guests select and start their games with a card swipe thanks to its integrated self-service kiosk. A motion floor and air blasts enhance the experience. Plus, players don’t need any additional accessories such as straps, wires, or VR Headsets.

Intamin  – booth #5119

Intamin is a creator of record-breaking amusement rides. At IAAPA Expo 2022, it will announce a partnership of three new rides with SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment for the 2023 season. Amongst these rides are DarKoaster at Busch Gardens Williamsburg, and Catapult Falls, a Flume Coaster at SeaWorld San Antonio. The companies will also show a ride car for the soon-to-be-announced coaster at SeaWorld San Diego.

Intamin’s LSM is one of the strongest launch systems on the market. Now, it is going vertical, with an innovative anti-rollback system and a state-of-the-art system designed for rapid accelerations, customisable to the preferences and site requirements of operators. The news follows Intamin’s successful installation of The Storm Coaster in Dubai. This reaches speeds of up to 77 kilometres per hour.

Last month, Intamin unveiled its latest media-based attraction design, Motion Tower. Offering unique sensations in a flying theatre-type ride, the concept offers guests an immersive experience with an uninterrupted view of the screen. Attendees will discover the newest action-packed 4D/3D attraction movie, Meg and the Lost Scepter. This a sequel to the company’s feature film Chickenhare and the Hamster of Darkness. Fans of the previous film fell in love with martial arts enthusiast skunk Meg as she set out on a journey to find the ‘Scepter of the Hamster of Darkness’ with Chickenhare and Abe.

“We are thrilled to share this trio’s expedition in this format,” says marketing and communication coordinator Alexandre Milazzo. “Working on the feature film they first appeared in was so much fun, and to follow their journey in an action-packed attraction is just thrilling.”

Additionally, Wanted Alive 4D, which is being promoted by nWave and Redstar Studio, will also be highlighted at the booth. During the short film, guests join Lori, a smart and savvy young woman, who is followed by the veteran sheriff Marshal on a quest to transport her goods to the closest city, taking viewers on an adventure through the Far West. They will encounter three evil brothers who are all wanted alive on the perilous journey.

OE ExperiencesLewis Frazer is speaking at the IAAPA Institute for Attraction Managers. This takes place on Monday 14 November from 1 pm to 4:30 pm. The IAAPA Institute for Attractions Managers is the attractions industry’s premier professional development programme. It is for leaders with five or fewer years of experience in attraction management.

The intensive programme features a blend of classroom instruction led by industry experts, case study examinations, and small group presentations. Participants gain a solid understanding of the key disciplines and processes required to manage a successful attraction.

OE Experiences Puy du Fou Gateway Concept

Frazer is a founding partner & the CFO of OE Experiences, a financial consulting and business management firm that specialises in the experience economy. He is an experienced, multi-disciplinary executive with a background in accounting, motion picture theatres, IT, construction and real estate development.

Earlier this year, blooloop spoke to OE Experiences about the development of The 407: Gateway to Adventure. This is a 200-acre entertainment, dining and shopping destination in Tennessee. It is currently under development by Kituwah LLC, the business subsidiary of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI). OpenAire, a leading designer and manufacturer of retractable roofs and skylights, helps to enhance water parks, preserving their long-term investment.

Using aluminium, OpenAire’s retractable roof buildings and skylights can transform the construction of water parks. The firm’s low maintenance systems are unable to corrode, with its operable roof and walls saving operators both energy and money. This is a low-frequency direct drive/tactile transducer that mimics the body’s ability to perceive low-end frequencies by using bone conduction.

Mover is a precise, robust, and efficient technology. It provides vibration for visitor attractions, such as rides, exhibits, science centres, and other immersive experiences, to give them a new dimension. It can be utilised to transmit audible and inaudible frequencies to the human body in moving floors, chairs, and rides.

Red Raion – booth #654

Red Raion, the CGI studio specialized in media-based attractions, has confirmed it will be hosting a booth at this year’s IAAPA Expo. Since it was founded in 2015, Red Raion has produced custom content for experiences all over the world with clients including Loveland Living Planet Aquarium, Vinpearl Land, and Carnival Cruises. The firm has been also rapidly expanding its library of licenced CGI titles that are currently shown in theme parks, FECs and other attractions around the world.

Storyland is helping design and master plan theme parks, resorts, and visitor attractions across five continents. Some of its most notable work includes concepts, designs, and themed environments for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios, The Walt Disney Company, LEGO, and Trillith Studios.

On Thursday 18 November, Storyland will host a special press event featuring Kebulania, the film city it is designing in Lagos, Nigeria, in partnership with Del-York. Planned as a hub for Nigeria’s burgeoning film industry, Nollywood, Kebulania will enable exceptional growth and opportunities for filmmakers and industry professionals in the region and include a movie-themed park. Storyland’s chief innovation officer, Matt Ferguson, and representatives from Del-York will be presenting.  

Set against the backdrop of a tropical getaway, Storyland’s booth will welcome visitors to a cosy beach campsite, fully equipped with an Airstream and a fire pit. Visitors who stop by will have the opportunity to register to win a free VIP tour of Walt Disney World’s four parks. Registration will be open on Tuesday and Wednesday during the event.

Themics IAAPA Expo 2022

Attendees at IAAPA Expo 2022 will be able to see several customised fibreglass sculptures at the company’s booth. Triotech – booth #5424 and booth #5818

Triotech, an award-winning creator of media-based attractions, will have its largest presence ever at IAAPA Expo 2022. The team will showcase five types of attractions and will be making key announcements. On Tuesday 15 November at 10.28 am, Triotech will reveal a new product for arcades and FECs. The same day, in a joint press conference with Lotte World at 11.35 am, it will announce a new custom attraction featuring a popular worldwide IP.

Visitors to the team’s booths can see the award-winning interactive Hyper Ride. This brings the firm’s motion technology together with a high-speed moving platform. In addition, the company is launching new movies for the Storm VR simulator and XD Dark Ride interactive theatre. Expo attendees can also discover these for themselves during the trade show.

Triotech OCT Walkthrough Hive Break Training Facility

Triotech has installed several new projects recently including the 8th NINJAGO The Ride for Legoland Resorts Korea. It has also worked on Hive Break, a double pathway walkthrough attraction for the OCT Group in China. The first interactive dark ride in Vietnam, Dragon Spell, was created by Triotech at Vinpearl Phu Quoc. At IAAPA Expo Europe 2022, the firm revealed its involvement in Puy du Fou Asia’s new SAGA experience in Shanghai.

Valo Motion – booth #4879

Valo Motion is a pioneer in combining interactive technology with physical activities. Now, the firm is launching its 6-person mixed reality gaming system. This combines whole-body movement and mixed reality to create a social, fun, and healthy experience for American amusement parks and FECs.

The firm has recently announced the first two ValoArena installations in the US. The new unattended 6-player mixed reality playground is now at RPM Raceway in New Jersey. Plus, it is also at Air Madness trampoline park in South Dakota.

WhiteWater, a leading waterpark manufacturer, is inviting attendees to explore one of the biggest portfolios in the water attractions industry. Whether it is water parks (Booth #2240), water rides (#2245), artificial surf (FlowRider & Endless Surf at #2236), or venue management software (Vantage at #2243) of interest, the global company helps attractions to make their visions to come to life.

At IAAPA Expo, WhiteWater will be introducing six new products. This includes the three new water slides of Blasterango Battle, Boomerango Squeeze, and Walhalla. The manufacturer is also launching AquaFortress, a customisable all-in-one aquatic play structure.

FlowRider will be presenting FlowSurf, a new deep-water surf experience. Meanwhile, a sixth new product will be unveiled at the show. This is described as ‘an extraordinary innovation, years in the making’.

WhiteWater will also provide an interactive demo which illustrates what the personalized guest experience could look like for managers’ parks.
